TRAN-STOP
Mechanical Shift Inhibitor

The Ford C6 Transmission shown to the right with Trans-Stop brackets is commonly found in airline GSE like the tow tractor on the left.  Base kits for various transmissions are very much alike, only the bracket designs are different.

  • Airline GSE
  • Belt Loaders
  • De-icers
  • Flight Kitchen Trucks
  • Lavatory Trucks
  • Maintenance Lifts
  • Push Backs
  • Refuelers
  • Tow Tractors
  • Agricultural Vehicles
  • Delivery/Rental Trucks
  • Emergency Vehicles

Safety Systems & Controls' (SSC) patented TRANS-STOP™ system can be set up to be a transmission Shift Inhibitor, a transmission Interlock, or both.

As a Shift Inhibitor, TRANS-STOP™ requires the operator apply service brake pressure to stop (or nearly stop) the vehicle prior to shifting the transmission to change vehicle direction.  This prevents transmission, driveline and drive axle shock load failures that occur when a driver shifts incorrectly while a vehicle is still moving.

From a safety point, in order for the operator of a stationary vehicle to shift the vehicle out of Park or Neutral, the operator's foot MUST be on the brake pedal applying pressure.  On Sept 1, 2009 the National Transportation Safety Board recommended that NHTSA require brake transmission shift interlocks (BTSI) on all light- heavy-duty vehicles to prevent brake pedal misapplication.  This recommendation comes on findings that brake pedal misapplication was the cause of at least two high-profile school bus crashes in recent years.  See full article in library below.

As an Interlock, TRANS-STOP™ mechanically locks the transmission in Park or Neutral until all monitored switches are in a "Safe" position.  For instance, on a Special Needs school bus, the transmission locks when the wheelchair door opens and on a bucket truck when the boom leaves the cradle.  Both vehicles can not be shifted into a drive gear until those apparatus are stowed properly.

THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS - TRANS-STOP™ can be set up to be both a transmission Shift Inhibitor and an Interlock on the same vehicle.  Take, for instance, an airline flight kitchen truck. TRANS-STOP™ prevents shock load damage during normal drive situations and acts as an Interlock when the truck bed is raised to service the aircraft.
TRANS-STOP™ mounts externally on the transmission and is available on a wide range of equipment (see Selection Guide ).  It is also important to note, the TRANS-STOP™ electrical installation does NOT intrude into the existing OEM wiring.
